A2 Hits A Rare Groove With New Video ‘GSD’

A2 brought his productive 2017 form into 2018 when he put out ‘I Need’, an extended cut that didn’t make it to debut LP BLUE. The song and accompanying anime video were well received, and people commented on his improved work rate. A2 has since teased fans with ‘Flex Luther’ which is yet to be officially released, although it was performed at his headline show last month. At the top of April, his birth month, A2 has ripped up his playbook with the psychedelic ‘GSD’ – a sly ode to one of his favourite strains of weed.

The ‘new’ cut has him singing and rapping over electronic flavours where a synth-heavy groove and subtle use of percussion help the song develop a sound which is reminiscent of something you might hear from Disclosure. Unlike anything he’s put out before, this effort finds A2 not afraid to push himself or his sound. Those with the keenest of ears will recognise the sample from the hook of Common’s ‘I Want You’ featuring will.i.am. Regardless, this feels like an authentic transition of A2’s sound helped by his long time collaborator and producer Clonez. The synergy that those two have is amazing and I hope we see it grow further.

I called GSD ‘new’ because I know from observation that this song was actually meant to be on BLUE years ago, proof that Young Influential is miles ahead of his peers. Imagine if he had managed to get that sample cleared, or any of the samples that he wanted to use originally. Who knows how BLUE was originally made to sound? In any event, watch the video above and enjoy the vibes. Let us know what you think.
